Paul’s thorn in His Side Revealed
Ac.9:3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.
17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
Sometimes your healing is not complete, for I too am living proof of this as well!
Gal.6:11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.
The brightness of God’s glory shown around Paul on that day going to Damascus, (Ac.9:3), and Paul was blinded for three days, and the damage was due to the lenses of his eyes being burned, and he would learn what things the Lord would make him suffer for His name sake. This is why Paul always went with a companion on all of his missionary trips. Paul asked three times for his eyes to be healed, and the Lord said His grace that is His Power and Wisdom, (1 Cor.1:24), would rest upon Paul, as long as Paul continued being His servant (1 Cor.2:1-16); (which is the same word used for being a slave in the Greek language); to Christ Jesus. As long as we are the conduit for His Spirit to flow through us, we too will be used by Him, when we too, worship in His Truth and His Spirit, (Jn.4:23-24), Paul had this hindrance and many more besides his eyes, for he was stoned and repeatedly whipped as reported by Paul in 2 Cor.11:23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities:
But Paul’s buffeting by Satan came by Satan always in Paul’s ear saying, you are not worthy of God’s blessings, for you held the clothes of those who stoned Stephen in Acts chapter 7.
Paul revealed his blindness to us in Galatians chapter 4:8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.12 Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.
13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.15 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me!
16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?17 They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,20 I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you (see Gal.1:8-9).
Finally we look to this passage that shows Paul’s weakness of the eyes in this passage as well: In which Paul seals His writings unto the Galatians;
Gal.6:11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.
12 As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.13 For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Are we too crucified to the world for Christ? Our are we blind in the flesh as well as the Spirit? Jn.9:1-40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth!
15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature (See Jn.3:3-8 & 2 Cor.5;17-21).
16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. (See Ac.9:9-16)18 Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
Satan always brings up our wickedness and the past sins; and all that and all those who don’t conform to the world of God, but this too is being allowed by the Lord to help bring His chastisement for if we judge ourselves now in this lifetime (1 Cor.11:31-32), and fix the problem by the power of the Holy Spirit working through us in our lives, we too can go and sin no more, Jn.8:11 and Jn.5:14 or a worse thing will come upon all who do not, in that they too will be beat with many stripes as in continuously forevermore, in the Lake of fire, where the worm dieth not, and you are that worm in the fire that is never quenched (see Eze.21:30-31 & Eze.22:31-32), unless we come to know Jesus as our personal Saviour and are filled with His Holy Spirit, Jn.3:3-8 & Ro.8:1-(9)-13, so He can lead us into all His Truths, Jn.6:63, 1 Cor.2:1-16 so we too can have the power and wisdom of God in us as well, 1 Cor.1:24, that was in Jesus Christ (Jn.14:14), so that we too can walk in His Way and His Truths as seen in His Life (Jn.14:15 & Jn.15:20), as we emulate Him, as seen in 1 Cor.11:1-2.
If we will judge ourselves now according to the word of God, we will not be judged by Him later (1 Cor.11:31-32), if we have truly been born-again of His Spirit in us and are found doing all that He has asked us to do that is in His words to us for that is His will for all who are called by His name (Mt.12:30-32 & Mk.8:34-38). All we have to do to Satan to get him to depart from us is to praise the Lord Jesus and Satan will flee from you; all we have to do is remind Satan of his future, when he starts reminding us of our past and tell him to get thee behing you as well; for if you are a child of the Lord jesus and have put Him on and have Hsi name written on your heart, Satan will have to obey you by the powerful name that is upon you Jn.14:14!
